Candidate Statement:

Promoting academic excellence and fiscal responsibility.

I grew up and still live in Avon Lake and attended the Avon Lake City Schools.  The stellar academic reputation of the schools is something that we should be proud of, and something we need to work hard to protect.  Strong schools are one of the most important factors that brings people to Avon Lake and keeps them here.

I have always had a keen interest in education, and understand the importance education plays for our children and our community.  The funding challenges that our schools continue to face cannot be ignored and we need to address them, while still maintaining the high academic standards and extracurricular activities that our students have come to appreciate. 

As a special education teacher, I see the challenges that teachers face in the classroom and understand them from a parent’s point of view. I would like to bring my perspective to the school board, as we move into the funding challenges in the near future.  My experience in the community, and in the classroom gives me a unique perspective and dedication to the students in Avon Lake.  

Avon Lake has enjoyed a successful run in its academic, athletic, and arts achievements.  In order to maintain this, we must be prepared for the economic challenges we will face. We must ensure continued educational success, and give our students the tools they need to face the future. 

I am asking for your vote for Avon Lake School Board so that we can continue to maintain the prestige our schools have come to know.  We are going to face difficult funding challenges, and I will bring an educator’s perspective to the decisions that determine the direction of the Avon Lake Schools.

I am married to Todd Houston (Avon Lake Class of 1988) and our three children, Alex (16), Madison (14) and Elizabeth (14), attend Avon Lake High School.
