City Surprised By Unexpected Lear Road Closing at Tracks

The city of Avon Lake is saying they had no advance warning of the July 27 railroad crossing on Lear Road, one of the city's main arteries. The closing essentially blocked off Avon from Avon Lake on the eastern portion of the city. The in Bay Village has been closed since July 25.

An email sent on behalf of Mayor K.C. Zuber to said the closing was unexpected and portions of Lear Road south of Walker Road will remain closed today.  

“We been informed that Norfolk Southern Railway closed Lear Road today (July 27) at the railroad tracks for repair and upgrades to the rail crossing,” the email said. “The City was given no advance notice of this closure.

“City Engineer Joe Reitz has spoken with Norfolk Southern and has learned that Lear Road will be closed at least for the rest of today and possibly tomorrow.”

Beginning July 28 Norfolk Southern will close Jaycox Road for upgrades for an estimated 1 to 1.5 days; however, Norfolk & Southern will not close Jaycox until Lear Road has reopened.

Jaycox and Avon Belden roads are both open into Avon.

When Jaycox reopens, Norfolk Southern will move to Moore Road for upgrades and, thereafter, to Miller Road.

On Aug. 8, Avon Belden Road will be closed at the railroad tracks for approximately five days for rail crossing improvements. The designated detour will be Abbe Road.  ODOT will be installing advanced warning signs for drivers. Local traffic can use Jaycox or Lear roads to Chester Road in Avon since Bradley and Krebs Roads will also be closed at that time.
