JVS Levy Fails

With 100 percent of votes in, Issue 15 is failed 52 percent to 48 percent. Unofficial votes have 21,751 votes cast in favor of the measure and 23,620 votes against. Results are unofficial until certified by the Lorain County Board of Elections.

This levy, listed as Issue 15 on the March 6 ballot, is a renewal attempt of three-quarters of one mill (0.75 mill) and an increase of one-half of one mill (0.50 mill). The current JVS 0.75 mill-operating levy, which accounted for 23 percent of the school’s operating budge, expired in December of 2011.

The failed issue was smaller than the that was defeated countywide defeated 43,367 to 34,186.

The new levy, had it passed, would have resulted in an increase of $1.29 per month for every $100,000 of home valuation.

The JVS includes numerous students from and and 11 other school districts in Lorain County.

Prior to the vote, JVS Superintendent John Nolan said the lesser levy was the result of removing new construction and program expansion.

Nolan previously said the JVS lost state funding in the amount of $1.1 million per year.
