Lorain County Offers Free Mosquito Control

Proactive Measure Against West Nile Virus

To prevent the spread of West Nile, Lorain County sprays communities with mosquito-killing chemicals and makes individual appointments for free.

“We’ll go out on site for a complaint and show the homeowners the breeding site … and treat the standing water,” said Scott Pozna, staff sanitarian for Lorain County General Health District.

One focus is on larvicide treatments, which kill young mosquito populations, Pozna said.

Crews spray a bacterium that ulcerates the gut of the larvae, but is harmless to other animals and humans, Posna said.

Mosquito control increased in 2002, when West Nile Virus reached Ohio and is now a main method of prevention. There are no cases of the virus in the county.
