Avon Lake School Board Will Vote On Redwood, Westview Redistricting Feb. 8

Decision nears after years of planning how to balance student distribution.

After a three-hour meeting Feb. 3, the Avon Lake School Board is recommending several student redistricting options for , and elementary schools.

A housing committee and the board has been discussing options for several years, but with the new additions to four elementary schools, are now ready to enact a plan to move students from more crowded elementary schools, such as Redwood, to closer neighborhood schools that now have more room.

The topic will be voted on at its Feb. 8 regular school board meeting.

“It has been a good process,” Superintendent of Schools Bob Scott said. “The board has come up with a plan that is in the best interest of kids and also makes sure the schools and district run efficiently in the long term.”

Scott said he expected there to be a few people who would like “something different or more,” but felt most parents were appreciative of the effort and opportunities to have their concerns heard.

The board discussed three options: realignment of which neighborhood students will attend Erieview, Redwood and Westview, grandfathering options and transportation for students grandfathered in. The options were presented during a PowerPoint presentation.

Realignment

Scott said the board is recommending two realignment options:  Students in the Hunt Club, Bridgeside South, and  the area off of Handford Court will realign from Redwood Elementary to Eastview Elementary.  The area south of Walker Road and east of Jaycox Road will realign from Westview to Eastview. (Students at Chancellor Court and The Vineyards will remain at Erieview.) Students who live on Belmar Boulevard and cul-de-sacs realign from Redwood to Westview.  The new Canterbury Road (from the end of the Canterbury Road in existence as of Feb. 8 to the west) will be within the Westview enrollment area.

Options not selected included having students  living on Canterbury Court west of Crestwood Drive, Cedarwood  Road, Waterside Road and cul-de-sacs, Belmar Boulevard and cul-de-sacs realign from Redwood to Westview. A second option not selected was having students in the area west of Crestwood Drive and north of Walker Road, which is in the Redwood enrollment area, remain in the Redwood Elementary School enrollment area.

Grandfathering

The school board is recommending that all students currently in grades kindergarten through third grade may remain at their current campus until they transition to Troy Intermediate School.

Transportation

The school board is recommending transportation be provided for the 2011-12 school year for grandfathered students. Other options included no transportation offered for grandfathered students and transportation supplied for grandfathered students through the 2014 – 2015 school year. Board members said any transportation agreement may be rescinded if Avon Lake City School District is forced to reduce services due to economic hardship.

The Feb. 8 school board meeting will start at 7 p.m. in the media center.
