Avon Lake Scores 'Souper' Bowl Victory

Creative fundraiser, food drive aids local non-profit pantry.

Avon may have won the football game last week, but Avon Lake was still a winner, too.

The two communities joined forces in a friendly competition to benefit Avon/Avon Lake Community Resource Services (CRS).

Avon Lake collected the most non-perishable goods to win the second annual for the CRS food pantry.

The two communities combined to collect approximately $8,500 and 7,500 pounds of food.

“This equates to about 50,000 pounds of food for our food pantry,” Pamela Ohradzansky, CRS event chairperson, said. “Even though Avon Lake received the trophy, the real winner is CRS and the Avon and Avon Lake families, individuals and senior citizens that we serve.

"We hope to continue this event as long as the Avon and Avon Lake football teams are scheduled to play each other. The support from both communities is overwhelming and CRS is so grateful.”

In the past two years, the event has raised more than $15,000 and 11,000 pounds of food.

"So many organizations and individuals teamed up to make this year’s 'Souper Bowl' a huge success,” Ohradzansky said. “Thanks to the Avon High School Student Council, Avon Lake High School Student Council, and the Avon Lake High School Boys Cross Country Team for making monetary donations.

"CRS would also like to thank the students, staff and parents from every school in both Avon and Avon Lake for their generous donations."

Although the creative food drive is over for this year, CRS is continually collecting items for the food pantry. There is currently a great need for toiletries and paper products.
