Schools Move Spring Breaks Away From Easter Holiday

Avon and Avon Lake school districts say testing dates force earlier spring break.

If you're looking to plan spring break for the 2013-14, here's a heads up. Local districts are not scheduling them for Easter week that year.

The Avon and Avon Lake school districts has opted to move spring break for the 2013-14 year away from the traditional Easter weekend to avoid conflicts with Ohio Achievement Testing that year

“We typically have a spring break aligned with the Easter holiday,” AvonSuperintendent of Schools Mike Laub said.

Spring break will start on March 24, 2014, which marks the end of the third quarter. Easter is on April 20.

"The 21st of April would have been the start of spring break,” Laub said. “Break would have started during the first week of testing.”

Since the state only allows a few weeks of testing, not moving the break would eliminate time for testing and makeup.

“(The state) only gives you a couple weeks to test but it has to be in sequence,” Laub said. “If you miss one week, you have one week to test and only a few days for makeup.

“We would be putting ourselves in a difficult position for makeups,” Laub said.

Avon Lake is following a similar pattern.

“In 2014 our break is at the end of the third quarter, March 23-28," Avon Lake Superintendent of Schools Bob Scott said.

Both Laub and Scott said there would still be a long weekend, the Friday before and the Monday after, at Easter.
