Avon Lake Boys, Girls Take Third at Reynolds Relays

Despite lack of runners, athletes earn records, score PRs.

Call the Reynolds Relays at Avon a little tune-up for the Avon Lake track squads.

Although Avon Lake's boys finished the relays third in the April 30 meet with 62 points, (Trinity won with 75 followed by Westlake) the team lacked a full roster due to spring break and was missing three of its top sprinters. The Shoremen almost scratched the 4x400 relay, and spent the day placing runners in events they don’t normally participate in.

And despite the fact there was no trophy, it still proved to be a record setting day for the Shoremen, especially its distance crew.

The 6400-meter relay of Matt Marron (4:31.8), Justin Housley (4:35.4), Francesco Maiorca (4:30.8) and Trevor Norris (4:41.0) set a meet record (18:18.24).

Norris proved to be the difference maker. Although he ran a 2:12 to start his leg, which was fast considering his personal best in the 800 is a 2:10, he finished strong and the record was Avon Lake’s.

"After last week, we were so close at Comet and we said lets get this," Matt Marron said. "Mike Parson ended up not running, but Trevor stepped up. It was definitely a big day for us because all four of us know this record isn't going to get beat."

In the distance medley, Housley, Pete Lancione,  Marron and Maiorca also took home first with a time of 10:44.23.  It broke the school record of breaking the school record of 10:46.75

"Peter (Lancione) set the tone with his 50.8, and I knew once I got the baton we were in good shape," Marron said.

Marron ran two personal bests in the events clocking a 2:02 in the distance medley and an impressive 4:31 in the 4x1600 meter relay.

"I've been kind of lingering around that 4:35 all season and knew if we wanted to break the record I needed to PR," Marron said. "It was definitely a big day for all of us, a lot of us set PR's, so it was sweet."

Equally as impressive were the Avon Lake throwers especially Andrew Young who was part of two winning teams.

He and Andrew Bohan won the discus with a combined throw of 276-02. In the shot put relay, Young and T.J. Burk combined for a total of 98-02.50.

The Shoremen also got a win from its shuttle hurdle team of Connor Corrigan, Mike Karpinski, Nick Bossard and Pete Lancione winning with a time of 1:01.91.

Avon Lake's girls also finished third in the meet with 52 points. Twinsburg won the event with 77 points, while Magnificat was second with 60 points.

The Shoregals were paced by Christine Bohan who set a new meet record in the pole vault relay with a 21-0 total along with teammate Morgan Srail.

Bohan won the event with her jump of 11-feet, while Srail came in third with a vault of 10 feet. Srail and April Andersson set the old mark last year with a 20-3.

Bohan also had the third best toss in the discus throw with her throw of 107-6,  and was second best in the shot with her throw of  36-07.  The discus team of Bohan and Aflen were second overall in the discus relay and took home third place honors in the shot relay.

Kristen Winkel took home second in the 100 hurdles with her time of 15.56, which broke the old meet record. Emily Kazarinoff of Twinsburg won in 15.27.

Avon Lake’s 3200 meter relay team of Katie Link, Halle Herzog, Kim Zelonis and Taylor Nedrich took home fourth with a time of 10:11.50.
