Avon Lake Boys Track Wins SWC Conference, Girls Place Third

Pete Lancione, Katy Link have big night with multiple wins.

Avon Lake coach Rob Rocco got a Gatorade shower and with good reason Friday night. His Shoremen made history, winning back to back titles for the first time in school history at the SWC track and field championships.

"This is sweet," a drenched Rocco said afterwards. "My old coach Coughlin got real close to it, so its an honor. We knew it was going to be a tougher field this year, so we tried to cover the other events and were able to spread the wealth. It really worked out."

Avon Lake tallied 126 points on the night, more than 40 over second place Berea, who had 80 points. It marked the fourth time since 2000 that they had taken home the SWC crown.

The Shoremen took several first place honors. Senior Pete Lancione won the 400 meter in 50.46. Lancione was also on the winning 1,600 meter relay (3:27.49), a season-best time for the foursome that included Alex Grunick, Nick Bossard and Francesco Maiorca.

Normally a 300 hurdler, It was the first time he had ever won an event at the SWC meet.

"It was great to finally win an event, " Lancione said. "Especially at conference, I've come in second and thirds but it feels good to finally win."

Making Lancione's feat even more impressive was the fact it was just the second time he had run the open 400. Lancione, though happy, wouldn't take any credit for the win, instead focusing on the team effort.

"This is our second year winning in a row," Lancione said. "Which makes it even more special this has been our goal all year. This is what all counts."

Lancione who also placed third in the 110 hurdles (14.89) and fourth in the 200 (23.48).

Showing just how great a team effort it was in Avon Lake's win, they took home first in just one other event the 3,200 meter relay (Maiorca, Justin Housley, Mike Callesen and Matt Marron ) which won on Wednesday with a time of  8:05.44.

Marron, who took home fourth in the 1600 meter run with personal best 4:27..30( Teammate Maiorica was second with a 4;22.7, just missing first) was one of those earning points. Like Lancione though, it was all about team following the win.

"I'll take a fourth place finish any day, because going back to back is the greatest feeling in the world," Marron said."This is the last time we will all be together in a meet as a team and it feels really good."

Other Shoremen who had a nice meet were throwers Jake Young and Andrew Bohan. Young, was second in the shot and fourth  in the discus  with a 51-3 toss and a 141.11 throw. Bohan took home second in the discus with a 148-6 toss. Housley was second in the 800 with a nice time of 1:59.19, while Bossard also had a nice meet with two seconds in the 110 and 300 hurdles. In all Avon Lake tallied points in 15 of the 17 events.

The girls just missed out taking home second place honors, but still had an impressive showing taking third with 103 points.

Midpark, which are led by the Barber twins, won with 123. Brecksville was second with 105 points.

Katy Link's efforts on the oval though, was perhaps some of the best running ever seen at an SWC meet. Not in the fact it set records, but the fact she won the 800, 1600 and 3200 meter runs, a nearly impossible feat and a rare one at that. It was the first time it had been accomplished in SWC history.

"It was all dependent on my Achilles because I was having some pain there, and it all depended on how the mile went and I felt pretty good," Link said. " We were planning on just doing the mile and 800, and coach said it's just about how you are feeling and I was feeling good."

Link who was the defending champ in the 800 and 1600 won the 1,600 in 5:08.15, the 800 in 2:21.02 and the 3,200 in 11:43.44.

"I've never really done that before," Link said. "I just felt good today and felt confident."

Also faring well for the Shoregals was Christine Bohan, who took home  first in the pole vault (10-9) third in the high jump (5-0) and fourth in the discus with her toss of (102-9) Teammate Morgan Srail also hit 10-9, but was second on missed attempts. Kristen Winkle had anice meet in the hurdle events, taking second in the 100 (15.4) and the 300 (46.9).

Avon Lake's second season continues next weekend at Amherst, when both squads head into District action.
