Avon Pitcher Mahon Stands Tall For Eagles

Right-hander having stellar year with a near-perfect season

Perhaps senior pitcher Anders Mahon’s biggest problem these days is getting his teammates and coaches to agree on his actual height.

Fifth-year head coach Frank DeSmit started the bidding at 5-foot-10 after the Eagles trounced North Ridgeville, 5-0, at on Monday.

But the right-hander countered with 6-0 to 6-1.

Another teammate gleefully chimed in with a teasing 5-6, but as you might imagine, Mahon’s expression indicated immediate offense to the notion.

Whatever Mahon’s actual stature from head to toe, it’s clearly his other numbers that matter most towards the team’s 18-1 record.

Mahon is 6-0 on the season with one save and a remarkable 0.55 ERA.

On his day off from the mound, Mahon shared his competitive philosophy: “Get ahead. Stay ahead. Shut ’em down,” and sat down with Avon Patch.com for a quick look into his life.

1. Who is your favorite athlete?

It’s probably (former Indian) Jim Thome. He’s been around a long time. I grew up watching him as a kid. I don’t know. He’s just the man.

2. What’s your favorite athletic moment of your career?

When I was at Lutheran West, I threw a perfect game (2010 against Cornerstone Christian). It was pretty exciting.

3. What’s your favorite food?

Steak … it’s awesome.

4. What are your plans for the future?

I’m hoping to attend Tri-C next year and play some baseball for them maybe. I’m probably going to talk to them this week and get things figured out.

5. What’s your favorite video game?

Tiger Woods golf … 2009. It’s relaxing and challenging because you’ve got to play yourself and the course and everything. I have a lot of confidence (from video games) on and off the field. It’s what gets me through the game when runners are on second and third.
