Eagles Advance to Semifinals in Girls Basketball

Team will play Elyria Catholic Feb. 27

The varsity Lady Eagles (14-8) beat the Avon Lake Lady Shoregals (3-17) in basketball 45-41 on Feb. 23, overcoming a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter to sneak by the Shoregals in non-league play.

Avon High School will advance to the district semifinals and play Elyria Catholic this Wednesday, Feb. 27 to play Magnificat High School in the district semifinals at 7:30 p.m..

The Eagles were led by sophomore Sierra Davidson, who scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds, and freshman Allie Bjorn who grabbed 12 rebounds and contributed 5 points.

Sophomore Regan contributed 6 points, four of which came in the fourth-quarter quarter comeback. She also added two steals. Junior Payton Mitchell grabbed three steals for the team and contributed 6 points. Freshman Catie Kelly and sophomore Jessica Yurkovich hit key free throw in the last two minutes of the game to secure the lead for the Eagles.

Scoring for Avon Lake were: sophmore Ali Balthaser with 16 points; senior Maggie Heschel with 7 points and 8 rebounds; fresman Sarah Win, 7 points; and junior Emily Nicholas, 6 points and 6 rebounds. Rounding off the scoring was senior Anelisa Kollias with 3 points and sophmore Kay Butrey with 2 points.

Avon travels to Elyria Catholic this Wednesday, Feb. 27 to play Magnificat in the District Semifinals at 7:30 p.m.
