Girls Lacrosse Coming to Avon Lake, Coach Needed

President of Avon Lake Lacrosse Club wants girls team formed; 15 express interest

A new sport is coming to the Avon Lake high school this spring: A girls lacrosse program is about to take off.

"My son Alex, who is a junior at the high school, and myself two years ago, and we both have noticed that the most successful teams in the state have corresponding girls programs," Brian Lamb, who is the president of the Avon Lake said. “And we are hoping will adopt boys lacrosse and girls as a varsity sport in the near future."

He said that following last season a number of girls were asking when a girls program was coming and Lamb decided to move forward with the program. This summer 12 to 15 girls signed up to learn the basics of lacrosse with the help of Lamb and current boys coach, Kevin Walz.

Now, the Avon Lake Lacrosse Club is seeking a head coach willing to lead a group of girls who have committed to start a lacrosse program in Avon Lake.

"We would love to find a recent college graduate, a young woman who played high school and college lacrosse," Lamb said. "Its a great opportunity for someone just starting in the coaching career, because our expectations are fairly modest.”

Lamb said the goal in the short run is to bring organized lacrosse to Avon Lake, and he says this summer they also started a youth program, that ran three times a week for seven weeks with half being for girls.

The Avon Lake Lacrosse Club has had two successful boys' lacrosse seasons and is hoping for the same for the girls program. Lacrosse is one of the fastest growing sports at the high school level and is now sanctioned as a championship sports in 21 states.

There are also several national lacrosse chapters across the country that play major roles in organizing regular season play and state championships in areas where the sport is not sanctioned.

Lamb said that anyone interested in helping start the girls program in the spring should contact him at brian.lamb@thompsonhine.com or by phone at 440-773-4586.
