Three Shoremen Commit to Play College Football

T. K. Burk, Jake Young and Mac Wightman sign letters of intent

Senior Shoremen T. K. Burk, Mac Wightman and Jake Young signed letters of intent Feb. 1 to play college football.

The three signed at a ceremony held at Avon Lake High School, that included senior runner Kristen Winkel (see upcoming story in this week's Patch).

School officials and coaches spoke before each athlete signed their letters and then donned their respective college’s hats.

“These are the moments we treasure,” Superintendent of Schools Bob Scott said to the athletes. “We don’t often take opportunities to celebrate our successes. It’s been a joy to watch you.”

Longtime football coach Dave Dlugosz put the signings in perspective.

“Stay proud of what you’ve done, but remain humble and thankful for the people who put you there,” Dlugosz said. “You have even greater things coming in the future.”

Offensive lineman T.K. Burk will attend the University of Findlay. The 6’5”, 305 pound senior earned All-Conference, All-County an All-District Honors and was a Region 4 N/S Nominee. Burk has also competed in shot put and discus at Avon Lake High School. His possible majors include education (social studies) and physical therapy. 

Offensive/defensive lineman Jake Young has committed to playing college football for Dartmouth College. Young, a 6’3” 250 lb senior carries a 3.87 GPA. He earned All-County and All-Conference honors in football and also participate in shot put and discus. Young is considering law as a field of study.

Offensive lineman Mac Wightman, a 6’3” 280 senior has signed with Youngstown State University. Wightman earned 1st Team All County, All Conference and HM All-District honors at Avon Lake. Possible majors include sports training and sport science.
