Avon Lake Scouts, Leaders, Trek Through New Mexico Wilderness

A crew of teenage Scouts and their leaders, including three from Avon Lake, went on a life changing summer trek through the Sangre de Cristo Mountains at Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico.

Philmont covers 214 square miles of vast wilderness with trails that climb from 6,500 feet to as high as 12,441 feet. During their trek Boy Scout crew members from Avon Lake hiked 72 miles over 10 days.

Attending from the Avon Lake troop were Stefan Nieschwitz, Nick Thum and leader Dave Thum of Troop 338.

"We trained for over a year for the trek by hiking around Avon Lake with full packs on our backs, which often caused stares from local residents," Scout leader Dave Thum said. "The most challenging aspect, which the local terrain in Avon Lake was lacking, was dealing with the steep climbs and thin air at high altitudes. Breathing became a focus at 12,441 feet when trying to climb, drink water or even conversing. Having 50-55 pounds on our backs certainly contributed to that challenge."

The group of scouts and their advisors carried everything they needed to survive during the trek on their backs while hiking from camp to camp, participating in backcountry programs along the way including rock climbing, challenge courses, horseback riding and pistol shooting. The trek included a conservation project where the Scouts learned and participated in the upkeep of Philmont’s ecosystem. Along the trek, Scouts endured tough challenges including backpacking in bear and mountain lion territory, steep climbs, and often-inclement weather.

“They may meet only one other group of Scouts on the trail in an entire day of hiking,” according to Backpacker Magazine. “Even in the most crowded destinations, each Scout group camps in isolation, out of sight and sound of other groups.

One of the most difficult challenges at Philmont was relying on fellow scouts to navigate the trek.  This meant trusting the crew leader to lead the crew to the correct destinations.   Once, we went 3 miles out of our way because the crew leader did not keep us on course.

Nieschwitz compliment the crew and noted the popularity of the ranch.

"The crew made what amounts to a scouting pilgrimage with their trip to Philmont," he said. "'Philmont Scout Ranch is the Boy Scouts of America’s premier high adventure camp and the largest youth camp in the world serving nearly one million participants since 1938."

The crew was comprised of Scouts and leaders from three different troops. Two of the troops were from the Mansfield and Perrysville areas. The third troop was from Avon Lake.
